The Importance Of Building Relationships At Work
By: Professional Development Center Of Glendale Community College November 1, 2017 Nov 1, 2017
In today’s world, it is not uncommon for someone to spend far more time with their coworkers than they do with friends outside of the office, or even their family. We often do not think about this, but it does spark a conversation about the importance of building relationships within your workplace. While some people like to keep their interactions dealing only with professional matters, there is an argument to be had about building more intimate relationships with those who you spend the majority of your days, and for that matter, your time with. We know for a fact that there are plenty of advantages and benefits that come with having relationships with those people in your office and in this post, we are going to explain to you what those are. Continue reading below to learn more.
Improving Teamwork
When people know one another on a more personal level, they are much more likely to work well together. Think about any time you bring someone new onto your team at work. Because this person is not someone the others know, it can be a bit of a struggle to get the team working as a cohesive unit at first. Additionally, if you have ever put together a handful of coworkers who don’t know one another at all and seen the outcome, you have likely found that group to be less productive as they need a good amount of time to break the ice. On the other hand, team members who know one another well and respect one another are able to work together quickly and efficiently because they are already familiar with how the others work and who needs to take on what tasks in order to best complete the project.
Improving Employee Morale
When you think about how much time everyone in your office spends together, it makes sense that having better relationships would contribute to higher employee morale. Coworkers who are friendly with one another will look forward to working with each other, making coming to work a little bit easier and more enjoyable than it would be otherwise. Conversely, when no one at your office tries to be friendly to one another or even interested in one another, it creates an unwelcoming work environment that is likely to lower morale.
Higher Retention Rates
Due to improved teamwork and higher employee morale, it is not uncommon that retention rates will also begin to rise. People want to work for a company that cares about them. They want to feel as though they have a family within their work community and if that is the case at your company, they are much less likely to leave to go somewhere else. The idea of starting somewhere new is not a comforting one to begin with. Add to that the fact that they will have to leave behind many people who care for them and who they also care for, and you’re likely to see people stick around for longer periods of time.
Increasing Productivity
Everything listed above will all work together to achieve one of the most important aspects of running a business: having productive employees. Plain and simple, when workers are happy, they are more productive. While you may be concerned that employees are going to become too friendly and slack off, a happy workforce is always going to produce far more than an unhappy one. So let them have their time to talk and goof-off, you’ll still see a greater return in the end.
