Should You Be Working for a Small Business or a Large Corporation?
By: Professional Development Center August 20, 2018
One of the many things people have to often determine about themselves as they enter the professional realm is whether they want to work in a small company or large corporation. In other words, do you want to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a sea? While the preference is entirely personal, there are certainly pros and cons when working in both of these atmospheres. If you have already chosen your field, now is the time to choose which environment will be best for you moving forward. In this post, we are going to discuss the characteristics of both large corporations and small companies so that you can get a better idea of where you want to end up.
Large Corporation
Structure
If you are someone who really loves structure and organization, a large corporation is likely to be a good fit for you. For the most part, Fortune 500 companies have rotational and training programs which are used to help prepare employees for the future roles they could hold at the company as they move up the ladder. Additionally, when you first sign on with a large corporation, there will be a very specific list of responsibilities that come with your job. On the other hand, keep in mind that if you are being hired for an entry-level position, you may not have a job that is as stable as you would like since larger companies are at risk due to an unpredictable economy.
Your Role
When you are working for a large corporation, you are just one person working on a team of many. If you are someone who really enjoys a group dynamic and collaborating with others, you will likely be extremely productive in a job like this.
Your Future
Working at a large corporation comes with a lot of competition. On the bright side, you will be surrounded by extremely successful leaders in your field every single day. You will have to prove that you are worthy of moving up the ladder, however. Every single day you are going to need to bring your A game in order to prove that you are serious about your current position, as well as your career in general.
Small Business
Structure
When it comes to the structure of a smaller company, you may find that it is a bit more flexible than it would be with a large corporation. Since the environment in a small business is always going to be changing, your schedule may follow that pattern as well. This means you may also be given the opportunity to work from home, to take longer lunches or spend a bit more time balancing things you are dedicated to in your personal life.
Your Role
Rather than having a very strict and straightforward title and job description like you would when working for a large corporation, you might be asked to juggle several roles when you are working for a small business. If there is a small business out there with a mission you believe in or are passionate about, chances are there will be a chance for you to prove that over time, leading to you receiving more responsibility in your role quickly.
Your Future
When working for a small business, you are going to be competing for a high position with fewer people than you would if you were working for a Fortune 500 company. This is often a perk because you won’t have to fight as hard to get your voice heard. This can lead to you becoming an integral part of the company over time.
