If you are stuck in a job that is making you crazy, it might be time to go down a new path once and for all. It might seem unrealistic to wish that you had a job that is more fulfilling and inspiring to you, but we are here to tell you it is not. In this post, we are going to discuss the different challenges that you may be facing as you try to make a permanent career change and how you can overcome them. Continue reading below to find out more.

You are your biggest obstacle

When you are working in the wrong job, there are likely signs everywhere you look that are indicating to you that it is not the right fit. Whether you find yourself embarrassed to talk about what you do outside of the office, or simply have no desire to ever be promoted, a general lack of pride in your work is likely something you have become well-acquainted with.

You probably also feel pretty numb when it comes to your job. On the drive to the office, throughout the day, even on your lunch break. You probably only get relief from the monotony after hours and on weekends.

However, the real issue comes when you admit to yourself that you are the reason you are remaining at your current job. After all, you have no idea what else you would do. While this may be a frustrating challenge, it is one you are causing for yourself, meaning you can solve it for yourself as well.

Lack of clarity doesn’t mean you can’t decide

While you might have the desire to go home and wrap yourself in a blanket and cry after a long day at a job you hate, this probably isn’t aiding you in making any decisions about your future. It’s important to realize that by putting off a choice, you are not doing yourself any favors. Make lists of possibilities, read more books, take psychometric tests and more. Just do something other than waiting for the perfect career path to fall into your lap.

You’re not going to find a job by looking for one

While it might be helpful for bringing you some hope about the future, scrolling through job websites isn’t going to land you where you want to be. We don’t want to discourage you, but if you have ever been on a job hunt, you likely know how rare it is to hear back from positions you have applied for. This only leads to more disappointment and that lingering thought that you will be stuck at your horrible job forever. Don’t put yourself through this.

You can’t do it alone

If you currently spend the majority of your free time outside of work hanging out with people who work at the same company as you, you’re not doing yourself much good. If you truly want to escape you’re going to need to broaden your horizons. Make different connections, share different ideas, feed off others’ forward movement. Plain and simple, your career is a long journey and not just a day-trip.

Act it out

If you have a fantasy about a new career but you aren’t sure you would be good at it, you should try to act it out. Whether this means enrolling in a course that would expose you to the ins and outs of a new potential career, or simply spending your free time pursuing a hobby that could potentially turn into a new career. Trying new things will surely help you to determine what the next step should be.

Look for people not jobs

Using job sites, recruiters and all that jazz to find a new job isn’t where you should be starting. Instead, we would encourage you to make connections with people who work in a variety of different fields. Observe them, talk to them about their experience, ask about their passions. Having connection across industries will not only help you to get a better idea of what career you should be pursuing, but it will also come in handy when someone you know is made aware of a job opening that they think you would be perfect for.

Ready to make the change?

If you are interested in leaving your current job for something that will feed your soul, you might have to try out a few different things first. If you want to get a better idea of what career you should be going after in the future, you may want to consider enrolling in a class or two at the Professional Development Center at Glendale Community College in Montrose. We would be happy to be able to assist you on your journey and help you to find a job that will allow you to look forward to going to work every single day.
