Although some people seem to be born leaders, we all have to develop skills and attributes in order to be great leaders. When businesses, both large and small, have ineffective leaders, the entire team feels the effects. A good leader inspires others to work effectively and to help and support their teammates. On the other hand, bad leadership leads to bad attitudes, lower work performance, and poor customer service experiences. At the Professional Development Center at Glendale Community College, we offer a leadership skills program to educate leaders. Today, we would like to cover some of the topics we study in the program:

Work Styles And Motivation

We work to improve leadership communication by examining the four different communication styles. By gaining an understanding of the four different communication styles, leaders are better able to understand the communication differences in others.

Communication Skills

Once the different communication styles are understood, we then learn how to effectively communicate with others by listening and providing feedback.

Defining Quality

This topic focuses on the leader’s role in defining quality so that others can perform at their highest level.

Managing Conflict

Dealing with conflict is an inevitable task of being a leader. We examine different conflict management styles to determine the best strategies for managing different conflicts.

The Multi-Generational Workforce

Often, work environments include people of a variety of age groups with different backgrounds. This section discusses how to effectively bring people together in an inclusive and positive way.

The Four Leadership Styles

What style of leadership do you fall into? We examine the different styles of leadership, and the style that best suits the individual leader.

Team Development

Team development involves several stages, and we study each stage in detail. By educating ourselves about each stage, we are then able to effectively manage the entire team development process.

How can you optimize your meetings so that they are as productive and efficient as possible? Ineffective meetings waste the entire team’s time, so we discuss how to make meetings as informative and engaging as possible.

Time Management

One of the most important qualities of a leader is effective time management. Disorganization can lead to stressful situations and conflicts. We teach you how to organize and plan your time so that you can work as efficiently as possible. When you manage your time well, you are able to achieve your goals more effectively.

Managing Change

After all, the only constant in life is change, but many of us resist change, especially in the workplace. We discuss how to effectively deal with change so that you and your coworkers can embrace change.

Being a Boss, Not A Buddy

Many people who rise into leadership positions are unsure of how to negotiate their new role as a boss. We discuss how to assert your authority in a respectful and compassionate manner.
